Did you know Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK?
October is the month that is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness and it is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. There are also many ways to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 5,000 people will be diagnosed. Knowing how to spot the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can be the reason the cancer is diagnosed sooner. The sooner the cancer is diagnosed can be crucial in providing a more effective treatment and ultimately, saving lives.
“The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. A painless, hard mass that has irregular edges is more likely to be cancer, but breast cancers can be tender, soft, or rounded. They can even be painful. For this reason, it is important to have any new breast mass, lump, or breast change checked by a health care professional experienced in diagnosing breast diseases.
Other possible symptoms of breast cancer include:
- Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt)
- Skin irritation or dimpling (sometimes looking like an orange peel)
- Breast or nipple pain
- Nipple retraction (turning inward)
- Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
- Nipple discharge (other than breast milk)”
There are many ways to fundraise for Breast Cancer Awareness, to help people who have been diagnosed and to assist the funding for the continuing research to find a cure.
